Social & Club Life

There's always something going on at Burgess Hill Bowls Club.

Down at the Club

There's always something going on, and the bar is open most nights and weekends through the summer. Come down to watch a game or two and enjoy a drink — visitors and new faces are always welcome.

Alongside league and friendly matches, regular fixtures in the club week include:

  • Monday afternoon roll-ups — a very informal chance for any member to come along and play in teams with other members.
  • Friday Club Night Drive — much the same, and a long-standing club fixture. It usually winds up with a social drink at the bar — and on a pleasant summer's evening you'll often find us sitting outside, watching the sunset.

Monthly Social Events

We have a thriving social scene at the club with events running every month of the year. There's something for everyone — past events have included:

  • Bingo nights
  • Quiz nights
  • Music nights
  • Beetle drives
  • Themed evenings
  • Members' socials

The Bar

The clubhouse bar is a great place to relax after a game or catch up with fellow members. During the playing season the bar is open on match days and social evenings.

Because the bar is run entirely by volunteers for the benefit of members, you'll find the prices considerably better value than you'd pay at your local pub — one of the many perks of being part of the club.

Even in the closed season the club stays open and welcoming. The bar is open on:

  • Wednesday evenings
  • Friday evenings
  • Sunday lunchtimes

Darts Team

We have our own darts team who practise and hold matches on Wednesday evenings during the closed season. Whether you're a seasoned player or have never picked up a dart in your life, members are very welcome to come along, have a go, and pit their skills against other members. It's a great way to keep in touch with the club over the winter months.

Special Events

Throughout the year we mark the calendar with several special occasions that bring the whole club together. These include:

  • Draws Night — the first event of the season. Everyone who has entered a club competition is drawn out of the hat and matched with their opponents and team-mates. A great night, and a real opener for the season.
  • Opening Season Coffee Morning — welcoming members back for the new season.
  • All-day events — several special days through the summer, including the Malcolm Mackenzie Charity Day and the Alan Parr Memorial Triples.
  • Finals Weekend — our club competition finals, played out over a weekend.
  • Candle Night & Fines Night — the last event of the season. We (try to) play a few ends in the dark with the rinks lined by candles, then head into the clubhouse, where any misdemeanour committed during the season — a wrong bias, a forgotten fixture — earns a small fine, with every penny going to the club charity. A guaranteed, side-splitting night.
  • Christmas Dinner — our annual end-of-year celebration.

Club Charity

Cure Usher

BHBC is proud to support Cure Usher as our club charity. Usher syndrome is a rare genetic condition causing combined hearing and vision loss, and Cure Usher funds vital research into treatments and a cure.

We work hard to raise as much money as we can throughout the year — through raffles, events, and collections — and every pound raised makes a real difference.
